Our feasibility study report for the Emotion Coaching programme has been published. The project was funded by the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) and delivered by Solace Women’s Aid.

What is Emotion Coaching?

A parenting programme designed to support non-abusive mothers and children (6-14 years old) exposed to domestic violence and abuse. It aims to:

  • Foster emotion regulation in children and mothers.
  • Minimise harsh parenting practices.
  • Strengthen parent-child emotional bonds.

About the Feasibility Study

Our study explored the impact and implementation of the programme in UK domestic abuse refuge settings across three Solace Women’s Aid refuges. It includes insights from participating families, support workers, and wider VAWG stakeholders.

Key Findings

  • 100% recruitment of eligible mother-child pairs.
  • High engagement & satisfaction from participants.
  • Preliminary positive outcomes, including improved child emotion regulation and parenting confidence.
  • Challenges: Limited pool of eligible participants; varying session completion rates and differing implementation experiences across refuge sites. Additionally, the outcome measurement tools used require further refinement to better suit the diverse participant base.

Why This Matters

Our findings highlight the potential of Emotion Coaching to provide crucial emotional and parenting support for domestic abuse survivors.
