Nick is a director of an independent public health consultancy, and an Honorary Professor at the University of Bath. He specialises in the development of policy and programmes on public health issues. While his major focus has been obesity, sustainable transport and the links to physical activity, Nick has also advised on topics as diverse as homelessness, mental health, drinking water availability, young people’s social development, and sport.
Nick has been involved in many complex evaluations of public health programmes in the UK, including evaluations of three complex ‘whole system’ approaches to promoting health and physical activity at town and conurbation level. These have involved complex systems mapping and/or social network analysis.
He has led or contributed to evaluations of a wide range of topics including physical activity and sport; urban cycling; healthy place-shaping; workplace health promotion; and early years provision. He has also used complex system science methods to help develop intervention approaches for a number of UK agencies.
He led on evaluation for the National Obesity Observatory, including producing their standard evaluation frameworks on weight management and physical activity. He previously worked at a policy level in both Departments of Health and Transport, and was formerly at the UK Health Education Authority, where he was head of the physical activity programme.
While on secondment to WHO in Geneva he helped set up a network of policy leads on physical activity. In 2011, Nick completed his PhD at the University of Salford, focusing on national policy approaches to promoting physical activity, and was made a Fellow of both the Faculty of Public Health and Royal Society of Public Health through distinction.
